Scottish Geneology - The surname "Mackay" is the English equivalent of the Gaelic "Macoidh," Mac meaning "son" and Aoidh derived from Aed, meaning red or the fiery one. The Mackays until about 1700 were from Sutherland, whereas Reverend William Murray Mackay was of the Mackays of Caithness who possibly moved there after the Clearances in Sutherland.
